About
Paul Stewart is an artist, filmmaker, curator and researcher whose work explores how people live with places, institutions and one another. Working across 16mm film, public projects, writing and education, he uses artistic practice to examine democracy, knowledge, environmental change and the ways communities understand the places they inhabit.
He is Principal Lecturer in Research and Knowledge Exchange at Teesside University’s School of Arts and Creative Industries and contributes to the Institute for Collective Place Leadership. His work connects artistic research with public institutions, cultural organisations and environmental partners. He also co-leads the UK’s only Level 7 Curator Apprenticeship, developed with MIMA.
With Sarah Perks, he co-leads Forms of Circulation, an ongoing series of films, exhibitions and collaborative projects concerned with how images, knowledge and materials move between human and more-than-human communities. Their work has been selected for the BFI London Film Festival and received Best Experimental Documentary at the Busan Experimental Film Festival.
Paul is the author of Art, Critical Pedagogy and Capitalism. He previously founded the Alternative Art College and Middlesbrough Art Weekender, and has developed work with Natural England, the National Trust, MIMA, Tate and IMT Gallery.
